The basis of cell-to-cell transformation in Paramecium bursaria. II. Investigation into the molecular nature of the transforming agent.

چکیده
A mating type transformation, involving cell-to-cell contact (abortive conjugation) insyngen 4 of Parameciwn bursaria has been investigated. By autoradiography, transfer of material between the conjugants in normal and abortive conjugation has been shown to occur. The transfer of this material, which includes protein, RNA and DNA, during abortive conjugation has been shown to be necessary if the transformation is to occur. The mating type substances produced by sexually competent cells of different mating types have been characterized with respect to their thermal stability. In all cases examined there appeared to be 3 mating type substances produced which had different temperature stabilities. No differences could be shown between the transformed cells and normal cells of the same mating type in relation to stability of mating type substance.

Response to Morphine in a unicellular animal model (Paramecium caudatum)
Introduction: Response to morphine and role of Nitric Oxide (NO) on expression of morphine response has been studied in vertebrates. But, little evidence is provided in the matter in earlier invertebrates. This investigation for the first time evaluated the effect of NO on expression of morphine potency in Paramecium caudatum. Methods: Animal after isolation from natural media and specific i...
متن کاملImmaturity substances in Paramecium primaurelia and their specificity.
Cells of Paramecium primaurelia in the immaturity period of the life cycle contain substances which repress the expression of mating ability when introduced into mature cells. When the immature cytoplasm of P. primaurelia was injected into mating-reactive cells of P. tetraurelia, P. caudatum and P. multimicronucleatum, immaturity was also induced in them. But the immature cytoplasm of P. primau...
متن کاملSemi-quantitative Analysis of Expression of Various Genes in relation to Possible Markers for Theileria annulata Attenuation
The sporozoites of Theileria annulata invade bovine MHC II cells, where they differentiate into schizonts. The later can immortalize and induce fundamental changes in their host cells. Live attenuated vaccine is an important way of controlling T. annulata infection of cattle. Production is by prolonged cultivation of macroschizont-infected cells. The mechanisms underlying this transformation ...
متن کاملSimultaneous Evaluation of Life Cycle Dynamics between a Host Paramecium and the Endosymbionts of Paramecium bursaria Using Capillary Flow Cytometry
Endosymbioses are driving forces underlying cell evolution. The endosymbiosis exhibited by Paramecium bursaria is an excellent model with which to study symbiosis. A single-cell microscopic analysis of P. bursaria reveals that endosymbiont numbers double when the host is in the division phase. Consequently, endosymbionts must arrange their cell cycle schedule if the culture-condition-dependent ...
متن کاملEffect of Industrial Sludge Toxicity on the Cell Growth of Green Paramecium, Paramecium bursaria
The effect of industrial sludge toxicity on the cell growth of a green paramecium, Paramecium bursaria was examined. P. bursaria cells were cultured in a lettuce medium supplemented with various concentrations of sludge suspension at 23 °C under LD (ligh and dark cycle) condition. Results suggested that P. bursaria proliferates normally even at 1.5% sludge suspension. However, 1.5x10 % sludge s...
